AgentWallet vs Stripe: or AgentWallet with Stripe?

This is not a replacement-for-Stripe comparison. Stripe offers Issuing virtual cards and Shared Payment Tokens (SPTs) for scoped agent-initiated purchases. AgentWallet offers an agent-facing API and policy workflow that can use Stripe credentials in certain paths. Choose based on where you want to own the orchestration.

The integration boundary

RequirementBuild directly on StripeUse AgentWallet
Virtual cardsStripe Issuing creates virtual cards via Dashboard or API, with cardholder and program setup.Agent card flows exist, but provisioned cards depend on connected providers, funding and account eligibility.
Scoped merchant paymentStripe SPTs let an agent grant a seller scoped access to a customer's payment method.A PAK-protected, idempotent SPT issuance endpoint is implemented for an agent's existing card-token record. The endpoint is not a promise every merchant accepts SPTs.
Spend rulesConfigure Issuing card controls and implement your own agent-to-card authorization policy.Agent policy checks and gated ledger/reservation paths coexist with card-level controls; confirm the specific path enforces the controls you need.
Live prerequisitesSet up your Stripe program and seller integrations; follow Stripe's card-data handling guidance.ACP live-mode SPT issuance from vaulted card credentials requires VGS proxy configuration and eligible Stripe setup. Test mode does not prove live acceptance.

Decision guide

Build directly on Stripe when

You already operate cardholder and seller integrations and want to own every step of card issuing, payment-method authorization and agent policy implementation.

Evaluate AgentWallet when

You need an agent-accessible payment API, MCP tools and policy-aware requests across card and payout paths. Inspect provider prerequisites and run an end-to-end test against your target merchant.

Frequently asked questions

Does Stripe support agentic purchases?

Yes. Stripe documents Shared Payment Tokens as scoped grants for agent-initiated purchases. Seller compatibility and your integration still matter.

Is an AgentWallet SPT a replacement for Issuing?

No. SPT issuance and card issuance are distinct. AgentWallet's SPT endpoint uses an existing card-token record; live-mode vaulted-card issuance has additional configuration requirements.

Sources and scope

See Stripe's SPT documentation, virtual card guide and Issuing overview. AgentWallet statements describe implemented endpoints, not universal merchant acceptance.
